Picture of Me

Hi! I'm Matthew van Bommel (most people call me Matt). I build tools to make data more accessible and impactful. Currently, I perform this role as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer with Zelus Analytics. Previously, I was a Senior Analyst in the Sacramento Kings Basketball Analytics department and completed an MSc Statistics at Simon Fraser University.

Publicly, I am best known for my work in examining scorekeeper biases, which resulted in a research paper presented at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, two published papers (one each for NBA and NCAA), and media coverage including The Canadian Press, VICE Sports, theScore, and ESPN.

My other projects include working with open data sets, creating simple games, developing this website, and more.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing sports (basketball, ultimate frisbee, tennis), reading, and board games. I also like to spend time learning new skills, recently this has included bicycle repair, juggling, and slack lining.
